Week 1 - Frankenstein

Frankenstein

This week I read Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. I was surprised by the style of storytelling in the book--I was expecting the narration to come from straight from Victor or at least follow him very closely the way most thrillers do, but instead the book was a third-hand account of Victor's life and his creation of the monster. I liked this style of narration because it helps the reader keep in mind that they're getting an edited account of what happened (so everything being told is being told for a reason) and also helps illustrate all the different layers of change Victor has gone through.
The sympathy the reader was made to have for the monster was also a surprise, since in pop culture he is not shown to have much depth beyond being terrible. The monster as a confused child and a victim of Victor's ambition definitely made for a more interesting story.
